1. Jane and Betty are going on separate holidays in a few days' time.再过几天简和贝蒂将要渡过各自的假期。
separate adj.(not joined or united; not the same) 分开的，不相连的；单独的，各自的。例如：
My brother and I sleep in separate rooms. 我和哥哥在各自的房间睡觉。
The two questions are quite separate.这两个问题十分不同。
separate['seprit] adj. separate ['sepreit] v.
注意: separate的动词与形容词拼法相同，但读音不同。
2. Is anybody seeing you off? 将有人为你送行吗？
1) see sb. off (go to a station, airport, etc. with someone who is going away) 给某人送行。例如：
I went to the airport to see Li Jia off yesterday morning.昨天早上我去飞机场送李佳。
My father saw me off at Beijing Railway Station and my uncle met me at Shanghai Railway Station. 我父亲在北京站为我送行，我叔叔在上海站接我。
2) 现在进行时除表示正在进行的动作外，还可表示即将发生的动作。
表示现在正在进行的动作时，谓语通常是持续性动词；表示"即将动作"时，通常是瞬间动词，而且常用表示将来时间的状语。这样的动词有go, come, stay, leave, arrive, start, die等。例如：
He is coming back tomorrow. 明天他将要回来。
The train is arriving. 火车就要进站了。
3. I think we'll take a taxi.我想我们将乘出租车。
take a taxi/train, plane, bus, lift 乘出租车/火车/飞机/公共汽车/电梯，这是动词短语，在这个句子中作谓语。作状语时用by taxi/train/plane/bus/lift。区别下列用法：
They are waiting to take the morning train to the town.他们正等着乘早班火车进城。
Is he leaving by bus or by taxi?他将乘公共汽车还是乘出租车离开这里？
4. Do give her my regards.请一定代我问她好。
这是一个祈使句，do在这里是强调的意思，do用在祈使句和肯定句中，加重语气，放在动词前。如果是过去时，动词则用did+原形动词；如果是一般现在时，第三人称单数则用does+原形动词。
例如：
Do come and see us when you are free. 有空一定来玩。
Do be quiet, please. 请你们一定要安静。
I do miss you,dear teacher. 敬爱的老师，我真想念您。
She does work hard. 她的确学习努力。
So you did come after all. 你到底还是来了。
5. Say "Hi" to Bob from me.(=Say hello to Bob from me.)代我向鲍勃问好。
say "Hi" to sb.(greet sb.) 问候某人。如：
Lets say "Hi" to Li Lei. 咱们去跟李雷打个招呼吧。
Yesterday we went to town and said hello to my aunt. 昨天我们进城问候婶婶。
类似的词组还有：
say good bye to sb. 向某人告别
say sorry to sb. 向某人道歉
say yes/OK to the plan 同意这项计划
say no to the plan 否定或拒绝这项计划
6. Have a good trip.(=Have a good journey.) 祝您旅途愉快，一路顺风。
trip n.旅行，旅途
同义词还有journey, travel, tour。它们的区别是：
1) journey通常是指在陆地上由某一地点到另一地点的旅行，也指旅行的路程，是个比较正式的用语。
2) travel泛指旅行、游历，是"旅行"的最普通的用语，但无路程的含义。
3) trip是非正式用语，指短期间来回的商业旅行或观光旅行。
4) tour通常指访问多处的观光旅行。例如：
He made a long journey from Beijing to Xining.他从北京到西宁做一次长途旅行。
He came home after five years of travel. 他在国外旅行了5年回到家中。
We went on a pleasant trip to the nearest seaside during our vacation.在假期中我们到最近的海滨作了
一次愉快的旅行。
They made a tour in China including stops at Shanghai, Hangzhou, Xian, and Beijing. 他们在中国的观光包括游览上海、杭州、西安和北京。
7. The same to you.(=Have a good trip,too.) 也祝您旅行愉快。这是对别人善意祝愿的礼貌回答。例如：
1) A: Merry Christmas!
B: Thank you. The same to you.
2) A: Happy New Year!
B: Thank you. The same to you.
8. Our guide is cooking supper.我们的向导正在烧晚饭。guide n.(someone whose job is to show a place to
tourist)向导，导游。例如：
The tourists need a guide to show them the city. 他们需要一位导游领他们游览这座城市。
guide v.(to show the way by leading) 引导、指导。例如：
He guided the man through the streets to the station.他给那个人引路穿过街道到达车站。
注意show与guide略有不同，show表示在前带路与某人一起去，guide有始终片刻不离地（职业性的）引导的意思。
9. We can't travel through the forest by road because there aren't any roads!我们不能从陆路穿过森林，因为这儿
根本没有路可走！
1) through the forest穿过树林
注意区别through与across的不同。它们都是介词作"穿过" 讲，through的含义与in有关，表示动作在某物体的空间内进行，across的含义与on有关，表示动作是在某物体的表面进行的。
常用的搭配有：
through the forest/valley/city/crowd/hole/window/telescope/tunnel 穿过 树林/山谷/城市/人群/孔/窗户/望远镜/隧道
across the river/plain/desert/sky/sea 穿过河流/平原/沙漠/天空/海洋
through the street 指顺着街道从一头走到另一头；
across the street 指横过马路。
10. At night we tie the boat to a big tree by the river bank near a village. 夜晚我们把小船拴到村庄附近河岸边的一个大树上。
1) tie…to 把……拴到……上。例如：
Don't tie the horse to the tree.Tie it to the post. 别把马拴到树上，拴到柱子上。
The robber tied the owner of the house to a chair. 那个强盗把房主绑在椅子上。
2) bank n.(land along the side of a river) 岸，堤。例如：
The old man takes a walk along the river bank every day. 那位老人每天沿着河边散一次步。
bank 也作"银行"讲。例如：
Kate sold her car and put the money in the bank. 凯特卖掉汽车把钱存入银行。
11. "I think it is wrong to eat monkeys."
与第三段中的"It is dangerous to swim in the river."中的it都是形式主语，真正的主语是句末的不定式短语
"to eat monkeys"和"to swim in the river"。这种句子
结构可以归纳如下：
It is/was+adj(+for sb.)+to do sth. for sb.其中for sb. 中的某人是不定式的逻辑主语，表示不定式的动作是谁做
的，有时可以不必提及。例如：
It is impossible for us to get there by road. 我们走公路去那儿是不可能的。
It is wonderful to travel in that great forest. 在那片大森林里旅行，真是太棒了。
12. We can see them flying along the river. 我们可以看到鹦鹉沿着河边飞翔。
see sb. doing 看见某人正在做某事
表示感觉的动词，如see, hear, notice, watch等，后面可跟"宾语+Ving"或"宾语＋（不带to的）动词不定式"的复合宾语结构，但两者在意义上有区别：
"see/hear sb. doing sth." 的意思是"看见/听见某个动作的一部分"，或者意为"看见/听见这个动作正在进行"；
而"see/hear sb. do sth."则表示"看到/听到整个动作"，或者意为"看到/听到这个动作完成了"。例如：
I saw him crossing the road. 我看见他正在过马路。
I saw him cross the road. 我看见他过了马路。
When I passed her room, I heard her singing an English song. 我路过她房间的时候，听见她在唱英文歌。
I didn't notice you enter. 我没留意你进来。
13. This afternoon I was just about to go swimming when luckily our guide saw me and shouted at me…. 今天下午我正要下水去游泳，这时，幸亏我们的向导看到了，对我大声喊道……。
1) be about to do sth.(just ready to do sth.) 马上就要干某事，正要干某事。
例如：
The plane is just about to take off. 飞机刚好就要起飞了。
I was about to telephone Ann when Ann telephoned me first. 我正要给安打电话，就在这时安先给我打电话了。
2) when conj.(at that time, and then)届时，就在那时；起并列连词的作用，第一个分句常用过去进行时，sb. was doing sth. when sth. happened，某人正在做某事，这时另一件事发生了，或sb. was going/about to do sth. when sth.happened，某人刚要做
某事，另一件事发生了。例如：
I was walking along the street when suddenly a car stopped behind me.我正沿着那条路走着，这时，突然一辆汽车停在我的身后。
Lily was just going to the party when she felt ill. 莉莉刚要去参加晚会，这时她感到不舒服。
14. The fish have very sharp teeth; they can eat a person in two minutes, leaving only the bones.这种鱼有尖锐的牙齿，两分钟就能把一个人吃掉，只剩下骨头。
1) sharp adj.(with a fine point that makes holes easily, with an edge that cuts easily)尖的，锋利的。例如：
a sharp needle 　尖利的针； a sharp knife 一把快刀
sharp也可以修饰其他一些事物。例如：
a sharp cry 一声尖叫；sharp eyes　敏锐的眼睛；sharp words　尖刻的话
2) leaving only the bones 在句中作状语，表示伴随或附加说明。例如：
They worked every minute in class, listening，speaking，reading and writing.　他们在课堂上分秒必争，听说
读写。
The six blind men sat by the roadside all day, quarreling about the elephant.　这6个盲人整天坐在路边，争论那只大象。
15. What a sad sight it was!　一幅多么悲惨的景象啊! 这是一个感叹句， what 修饰名词，名词前可以有形容词修饰。这个感叹句的句型是：what（＋形容词）＋名词a＋单数可数名词复数可数名词不可数名词 ＋主语＋谓语！
例如：
What a lively and interesting class it was! 多么生动有趣的一节课啊！
What silly questions you asked!　你们提的问题多傻呀！
What fine weather it is!　多好的天气啊！
感叹句还可以用how开头的句型，这时 how 后面跟形容词或副词：How＋形容词/副词＋主语＋谓语，也可以将形容词或副词省略，用how修饰一个句子。例如：
How sad the sight was!　这景象多凄惨啊！
How terrible the mixture taste! 这种混合液尝起来真难吃呀！
How beautifully she sang!　她唱得真好！
How time flies!　时间过得真快啊！
How they worked!　他们干得真起劲啊！
16. For miles and miles I could see nothing except a great fire and lots of smoke.　一连好几英里，除了大火和浓烟我什么也看不见。
1) for miles and miles介词短语在句中作状语。又如：for years and years 一连好几年，for days and days一连
好几天。
2) except prep.(not including)除了，不包括。如：
The window is never opened except in summer.　这扇窗子除夏季外从来不开。
Everyone is at school today except Lin Tao.　除了林涛大家都到校了。
注意，在 no one, nobody, nothing, all, everyone
everything等词之后，也可以用介词but表示"除了"，如：
Under the soil there is nothing but sand.　在土壤下面除了沙子什么也没有。
在课文的这两个句子中but与 except同义。 nothing except与 nothing but都可以译为"仅，只"。例如：
I could see nothing except/but a great fire and lots of smoke.(=I could see only a great fire and lots of smoke.)
Under the soil there is nothing but/except sand. (=Under the soil there is only sand.)
17. Many people can not find work in the capital.　许多人在城里找不到工作。
work(employment)工作，职业；是不可数名词。job也作工作，职业讲，是可数名词。 find work找工作可以用 find a job替换。例如：
He found work at the bank.(=He found a job in the bank.)他在银行找到了工作（职业）。
He is out of work. It's difficult for him to find work.=He is out of (a) job. Its difficult for him to find a job.他失业了，很难找到工作。
18. They move on to a new place every two or three years. 每两、三年他们就继续迁移到新的地方去。
1) move on (move continuously instead of stopping) 继续向前迁移。
on在此句中是副词，意思是"往前"，"继续下去"；类似的词组还有：go on 继续下去，work on 继续工作；talk on 继续谈下去；march on　继续前进。
2) every 每；常用在 "every＋基数词＋复数名�"的结构中。例如：
Take the medicine every four hours.　每4小时服一些药。
He comes here every three days.　他每隔两天来这里一次。
　　注意作"每隔…"译时，就要在基数词上减去一，又如：
The train runs every four days. 火车每隔3天开1次。（或每4天）
They usually come home every two weeks.　他们通常每两周回一次家（或每隔一周）。
　　当every后的数词是two时，不仅汉语有两种说法，英文也有两种说法。例如：
every other day(=every two days) every other line(=every two lines)
19. The soil is very thin in the forest.　森林中的土壤层很薄。
soil n.(the top covering of the earth in which plants grow, ground)
土壤，土地。例如：
Plants grow well in good soil.　作物在肥沃的土壤里长得很好。
注意earth, ground, land, soil都有土地的意思，有时可以通用，但这几个词的着重点有些不同。
　　1) earth着重指与天空相对的大地，也指区别于岩石的泥土。
例如：
The plane fell to the earth.　飞机降落在地面上。
This worm eat earth.　这类虫子吃泥土。
　　2) ground主要指大地表面。例如：
They are all lying on the ground.　他们都躺在地上。
　　3) land 着重指与河、湖、海洋等相对的陆地。例如：
After the bad boat journey we were glad to arrive on land.经过艰苦的水上旅行，最后我们感到非常高兴地上了岸。
　　4) soil主要指富有有机物，宜于耕种的土壤。例如：
This soil is good for growing rice.　这种土壤宜于种水稻。
20. It can easily be destroyed by the burning and by the cows.　森林中的土壤很容易被火烧毁和被牛踩坏。
destroy vt.(put an end to, break into pieces)　毁坏，破坏。例如：
Fire destroyed the forest.　大火烧毁了森林。
All his hopes were destroyed.　他的一切希望全都破灭了。
21. The soil is made from the dead leaves of the trees above.　土壤是由上面的落叶腐烂而成的。
be made from与 be made of都译为"由……制成"，它们的区别在于be made of 这一句型中，其制成品没有变得看不出原材料，而用be made from指其制成品已变得看不出原材料的原样。本句中"土壤由 树叶腐烂而成"，土壤已不是树叶的样子了。又如：
Bread is made from wheat. 面包是小麦加工做成的。
Nylon is made from air, coal and water. 尼龙是由空气、煤和水加工制成的。
The house is made of wood. 这所房子是木头的。
That bridge isn't made of metal but stones. 那座桥不是金属的而是石头的。
此外be made还可搭配 in，表示产于某处。例如：
This kind of computer is made in China.　这种计算机产于中国。
be made by sb. 由某人制的。例如：
The cake is made by my mother.　这蛋糕是我妈妈做的。
be made into 被制成。例如：
Grapes can be made into wine.　葡萄可以酿酒。
22. How long does the journey take you?
take(need)花费，需要（时间）；常用于下列句型中：
It takes/took/will take sb. some time +to do sth. 其中sb.可以省略。主语通常用it，也可用journey，flight
（飞行）， game等名词作主语。例如：
The game took four hours.　那场比赛费了4个小时。
It will take me a whole month to travel in the city. 在这座城市旅游将会花去我整整一个月的时间。
How long does it take you to practise reading every day?　每天练习阅读花费你多长时间？
　　这个句型也可以用某人作主语，但就要用下面的句型：
sb. spend/spent/will spend some time on sth./ (in)doing sth.例如：
We spend two hours in practising reading every day.我们每天花费2个小时练习阅读。
